The Sense of an Ending
- How do you understand memory and history with reference to your reading of this novel.
- How do you understand the concept of suicide with reference to your reading of literature ranging from Renaissance play Hamlet, 20th century Existential Philosophy and this 21st century novel The Sense of an Ending?
During our whole life we find so many characters in literature (and
also in real life) who commits suicide. In the case of 'Hamlet' we can
say that because of the moral concern he doesn't commit suicide. ( But
it can be possible that 'Hamlet' has still desire for a throne )
In the journey of literature we have referred many texts and characters. In the case of Hamlet, he not committed the suicide. He wants to kill the murderer of his father or we can say his Eros was very powerful and it wins over Thanatos. Albert Camus described Suicide as a rejection of freedom, instead of escaping from the meaninglessness life, we should embrace life passionately.
“I don’t envy Adrian his death, but I envy him the clarity of his life.”
In the novel if talk about Adrian, he ended his life with certain clarity. He has a clarity of and death also. We all believe that life is gift, it our choice how we live it. As it is the death is certain decision to end our life with whatever reason. Adrian lives his life with this philosophy. Robson and Adrian both were committed suicide. Their Thanatos was wins over their Eros.
